One of the major construction projects that proved very challenging to Phonesack Group was the ‘New Kaleum Town Relocation Project’, which spanned a total area of 1,502 hectares, located about 32 kms from the Old Kaleum Town. Since the Old Kaleum Town is set in a mountainous terrain and difficult to access, it lacked all the necessary facilities such as schools, health dispensaries and other basic utilities, and was considered as one of the poorest and most underdeveloped districts. The New Kaleum Town was set to provide all of these facilities, including newly constructed secured houses, governmental offices, business centers, water supply system, irrigation system, electrical supply and access route. The Project commenced in January 2012 and was completed in 2014, whereby about 2,500 families were relocated from the Old Kaleum Town.
In 2017, Phonesack Group was also granted the contract for resettlement related works for the project-affected people (PAP’s) due to the construction of the Nam Theun 1 Hydropower Project, which included the construction of resettlement houses, public infrastructure facilities (schools, hospitals, market, village office, village hall, temples), flood protection dykes, agricultural fencing and irrigation system. A total of 624 households have been permanently relocated to the new resettlement site. Phonesack Group is set to complete all the works for handover to NT1PC by 2023.
